It's 2017 and people are still picking up smoking cigarrettes. As if the typical American diet wasn't bad enough, people are still letting themselves get addicted to smoking on top of it despite how common knowledge it is how bad they are for you You see the commmercials that encourage people to stop smoking. You have people come to schools and explain to kids why and how to stay away from smoking. But they still do it Why do you think this is and do you think we will ever reach a point where close to nobody smokes? And what do you think we should do to get there? I think we should raise the price of cigarettes gradually to a point where it's ridiculously expensive. Like $25 a pack. Also we should have more places don't allow smoking. I know of a town close to where I live where you're literally not allowed to smoke anywhere. Other than that idk. Edited by Ssj3vegito96, Sep 24 2017, 04:22 PM.

I honestly can't wait until it goes away, it's just vile all round. Stuff like weed isn't too bad but regular cigarette smoke is nasty and I've no idea why people get in the habit. If you're already in the habit getting out is hard obviously but I can not understand why someone smells cigarette smoke, sees a smokers teeth or smells their house and thinks "I want in on that" I feel like it will pretty much be gone within 10 years, in richer countries at least where alternatives are available. Too many health problems get aggravated by it, if you have a breathing issue like asthma just being near someone who has smoked recently can f*** your breathing up, so it's kinda selfish on that end. At least with alcohol, while it reeks, it doesn't usually affect people to be in the vicinity of it. And you don't typically have to put up with it anywhere you go outside. |

Raise pack prices to $50-70 per pack for a year, then $100, and keep going up $50 each year until you hit $500 per pack. |

Raising the price isn't the answer. The majority of the base users are below average income. |

What do you mean? Right, most smokers are below average income so if they price is raised a lot then they'll have no choice but to cut back on them so they can afford everything else they need. That's how I see it. Is that not how it works? |

They won't, though. A lot of people are addicted, and they'll gladly make sacrifices in order to keep buying their cigarettes. Raising the price only hurts those people and makes their situation worse. Expanding help/support programs are probably the best chance of impacting users. |

It's an addiction. People will be performing sexual acts and stealing from their family in order to get cigarettes if you raise the price to some absurd number. |

I guess so. Well then it doesn't need to extremely expensive but shouldn't it still be raised to a point where it's expensive enough prevent people from getting into it? And it's not like the price would just jump $10. It would be a gradual increase or give people a heads up before so that people can get used to it. For example if we let people know by 2020 for example that the price of cigarettes will be up to $20 or $30, then people can start cutting back on it now and will have plenty of time. Those who don't are kind of a lost cause as harsh that may sound right? Edited by Ssj3vegito96, Sep 24 2017, 07:37 PM.

I think for sure it'll be gone in the future. Maybe in 15-20 years. The government might even think about outlawing it completely and then just hoping that vape sales can recoup most of the money that cigarettes gets them currently. Although for me, and ideal world would be one without cigarettes or vaping, since vape smoke is personally just as annoying (and moreso, now that smoking in public is pretty rare nowadays). |

Doesn't the vape stuff actually smell good though? I've not been near it yet but I hear you get different flavours so I imagine it doesn't smell as terrible, hopefully anyway. It's annoying how intrusive an addiction it is, it's impossible to avoid it where I live. You can't go for a walk anywhere without going past someone wafting smoke in your face. I realize it's addictive but I'm pretty sure it's not nearly as addictive as something like heroin is it? There's plenty support already, nicotine patches and such. It shouldn't be as hard to quit as more extreme substances anyway. Honestly I think people should probably try harder to quit but they don't have much reason to. At work I see a lot of financial statements and sooo many people spend £100+ on smoking a week. Frankly I don't care if coming off it is hard because it should be done, too many kids have to sit in houses full of smoke and there's no way that's healthy. Obviously being around people who do it encourages kids to get in to it as well and there's nothing positive about the habit. I doubt they could totally outlaw it but I think you should be banned from doing it at home if you have children, some people seem ridiculously oblivious to the side effects or just don't care. |

That's just not how people use money though. That's just not how addictions work. Raising the price will simply make other areas of their life suffer. They'll be late on rent or other payments. They'll stop buying food in general and their overall health will decline. I've seen it happen to people. Then they resort to crime to fill the need. Or become completely dependent on someone else until that person kicks them out of their life ruining a relationship. Chemical dependency has its trademarks that literally defines how people behave depending on the level. It's really sad to watch someone spiral, but awesome to see someone defeat it. The price was already hurting people as it stands today due to being taxed into the ground. Thankfully vaping came around and people pay about 1/10th the price for a similar kick. |

Dude, do you seriously think that by raising the price you can put an end to smoking? Like what the hell bro. That's like saying lets start pricing the ekg print outs or basically the doctors deciding to replace the iv with a 2-litre sprite just cause your insurance got cut off. People can do whatever they want to do as long as they don't hurt others in a bad way. I mean, if you were talking about something like fostering more smoking and non-smoking zones, so that the non-smokers don't have to worry about their health and makes those wusses sleep peacefully at night, then I am all in for it.

Never going to happen. Not in your lifetime, not in mine. It's freedom of choice. If you can burn something up and inhale it to get high, people are gonna do it. Why? Because a bic lighter and a glass pipe are cheaper than a vape or anything else like that. Or rolled cigarettes. Whatever it is - from cracky to tobaccy - there will always be smoking. Period. It's good we actively discourage it as a culture though, but, there will never be an end. This is essentially like asking if there will ever be an end to the war on drugs. Or the war on terror. Or if Doctor Who will ever end. Not your body, don't give a f***. Trust me, you'll die faster stressing out about what everyone else is doing with their personal rights rather than some second-hand smoke
